Some stories just stay with you—and baby Sydney’s is one I’ll never forget. From the very first message his mama sent, I could feel her excitement and deep love for this long-awaited baby.
As an Edmonton maternity photographer, it’s such an honour when someone chooses me to capture their journey into parenthood. But when they’re willing to make the nearly 2-hour drive to my studio, I’m truly humbled.
Sydney’s mom arrived early for her solo maternity session. She looked so naturally beautiful—full of energy and sweet compliments. She told me how my work stood out. She had searched far and wide, and something about my photos just felt different. That’s why she knew the drive was worth it.
She was pampered with professional hair and makeup by the talented Jolene from Lily Grey Artistry. We spent the morning chatting about motherhood. She shared how long she and her husband had waited for this baby, and what it meant to them. As a fellow mom, it was an emotional and empowering reminder. We love so deeply—even before we meet our babies.
Just a few weeks later, I had the absolute privilege of meeting Sydney when he was just one day old for his Fresh 48 session. As an Edmonton Fresh 48 photographer, I live for those raw, real moments in the hospital—the wrinkly toes, sleepy eyes, and brand-new love that fills the room.
Sydney’s parents were already so in love, but I could also see the exhaustion, the overwhelm, and the vulnerability that comes with those first hours. I gently reminded them, as I do with all new parents:
“Trust your instincts. This baby was always meant to be yours. You will know what they need. These first days are hard, but they pass in the blink of an eye. Soak up the late-night snuggles—you’ll miss them sooner than you think.”
A couple of weeks later, Sydney’s family made the two-hour drive back to my studio for his Edmonton newborn photos. While Jolene pampered Mama again—she always works her magic—little Sydney gave me a run for my money! He was wide awake and had strong opinions about how things should go. Eventually, though, he gave in to sleep. We were able to capture some timeless, peaceful portraits.
And then… magic. A perfectly timed little smile while snuggled in his mama’s arms—my absolute favourite shot of the entire session.
Their final gallery included a beautiful selection of 30 digital images. I was so excited when they chose the sweetest family portrait for their complimentary canvas. That canvas will be making its way to their home soon. I hope it brings a smile every time they pass it in the hallway.
When families like Sydney’s travel hours just to be photographed by me, I have to pinch myself. How did I get so lucky to meet such incredible people? These stories, these connections—they fuel my passion for what I do.
Capturing these fleeting, once-in-a-lifetime moments fills my heart. As an Edmonton maternity photographer, Edmonton Fresh 48 photographer, and Edmonton newborn photographer, it’s a feeling I can’t fully explain.
If you’re expecting and thinking about capturing your journey through pregnancy, birth, and those early newborn days, I’d love to connect.
