Edmonton Newborn Photography {Workshop learning with Dewdrops Photography}

Hello friends. It has sure has been awhile. The past 20 months of being open, then closed, then open again made time for me to start comparing myself too much to others and lose some of the passion I had for photography. I started to think my business would never recover and my goals that I had set for 2020 and never attained would also never be met.

Fortunately, I have the most amazing and supportive family and also the most giving clients who returned to me as soon as it was safe to do so. I started meeting new families again and I am happy and relieved to say that my photography business is finally up and running at the same capacity it was before COVID. 2022 is going to be a big year and I can’t wait to share more details with you all soon about the the exciting changes that will help me grow my photography business to a place I always dreamed of.

Back in early 2020 I had plans to grow the newborn and maternity photography side of my business to a higher level. I have always taken any opportunity to learn how to be a better newborn photographer and in March 2020, right before the world shut down, I was lucky to attend a workshop with Kelly Brown, a wonderful and talented photographer from Australia and known world wide. I left that workshop with so many goals and so much confidence, only for everything to close. Weeks stretched to months without any babies to photograph, and my Stand in Baby really helped, it just wasn’t enough.

Fast forward to 2021 and I started photographing babies again but definitely felt a little rusty. Every year I also take part in the Milky Way Newborn Retreat, an online retreat, and the 2021 retreat was just what I needed to get going again. I started offering studio maternity sessions for the first time, and was blown away with the response and amount of bookings. But I needed a bit more of a push to bring myself to the level I needed to be to offer the best newborn photography experience to my clients and grow as a professional photographer.

I have been a fan of Amy McDaniel | Dewdrops Photography for several years and after learning online from her for many of those years I always dreamed of training with her in person. Luckily those plans came into fruition early this year and in October 2021, just after my 30…something birthday, I got on a plane to rainy Seattle and drove to Olympia, WA to attend a 2:1 two day newborn photography workshop.

To say the experience was incredible would be an understatement. Watching Amy pose babies on day one I couldn’t believe the care and patience she took to pose each baby (we had 4 little ones that day). I got so much from just observing her up close, watching her pay attention to every detail and move baby between poses effortlessly and with so much confidence. Here are a few of the baby’s I was lucky to capture on the first day.

We were sure blessed to have such beautiful and sleepy babies to photograph. I couldn’t wait to get back to my hotel that night and edit some of the best newborn photos I think I’ve ever captured. That night though I also had to prepare for day 2 - the day I would pose the babies with one of my photography idols over my shoulder. What was instilled in me the first day though gave me confidence I never had before and I couldn’t wait.

And what a day 2 it was! We had two gorgeous babies, one sweet little one returning for the second day. I am so grateful to the parents of these little babes who gave me this amazing opportunity to learn. I posed baby in all the new poses I want to add to my session flow in 2022 and with Amy’s gentle guidance I attempted poses I had always admired but never had done before. I had the most patient little man first and was able to pose him exactly like I wanted to with such ease. Little Kelani was a bit more of a struggle, but just like in the real world no baby is alike and some just require a little more patience. Here are the images of the baby’s I posed and photographed on day two of the workshop.

Miss Amy I cannot thank you enough. You have provided me with the confidence to grow my newborn photography business to the level I always dreamed of. Training with you was a dream come true and was everything and more than I expected it to be. Special thanks to Sandi, a newborn photographer from California, who was a pleasure to train with.

When you book a newborn session with me you can rest assured that I will provide a professional and comfortable experience and pose and photograph your baby safely and with years of experience and education from some of the world’s best newborn photographers behind me. Book your 2022 session now and you won’t just lock in 2021 pricing, but you might be a part of a the big news I have coming early next year. Listening to Disney hits while I write this post and dreaming of the Disney cruise I will be on with my family this weekend. Packing and getting three kids ready for a vacation is no joke, but between loads upon loads of laundry and to do lists, I have many sweet new years babies to feature on my blog before I take off for 10 days. The last time we took a family vacation it was the beginning of September and since that is my busy time of year I ended up working until 3 am the night before our very early flight, and was pretty much a zombie for most of the trip. We didn’t make the same mistake this time, instead leaving during one of my slowest times of the year. That being said now is the time of year that spring and summer newborn openings book up fast! So if you are expecting in the next 6 months, now is definitely the time to book. I have 1-2 openings remaining per month between March and July. Be sure to like and follow me on Facebook and Instagram as I will be announcing a special newborn session promo in the coming days.

In other news, I am excited to announce my next Mamas & Cameras class. This class is for moms with a DSLR who want to take better photos of their kids, or even want to take the step towards running their own photography business. We spend a whole morning learning to shoot in manual mode - a key step in taking better photos and the one step it took me to get to where I am now, running a successful photography business that I love. This class will be held at one of my favourite indoor photography locations, a space that I frequently photograph families in. Click the button below to learn more.

I was welcomed into baby Sabine’s home with the friendliest hug from big brother Remy and from then on I knew that I would have the most wonderful time photographing this beautiful family. Remy was an absolute dream to capture with his baby sister, so cuddly and gentle - and those adorable curls! Sweet miss Sabine definitely made me work for those sleepy shots, but I definitely never mind a little extra baby snuggles. Newborn photography requires a lot of patience, so sessions can sometimes take a full four hours; this is why I definitely recommend in home newborn sessions for families with older siblings - if you are lucky your 2-3 year old still naps and this is much easier to deal with in the comfort of your home. I’ll bring all the props and snuggle your baby as much as they need to be. Nicole and Jason, thank you so much for inviting me into your home to capture this very special time for your family. Wishing you all the best as a family of four. Enjoy.

Happy Sunday everyone. I hope you had a fabulous weekend and enjoyed some of the nicest weather we’ve had in a month. Between Thursday and Saturday I shot 3 family sessions and a sweet pumpkin patch cake smash session, so busy, so today it was time to relax a bit and get caught up on some blogging and editing. You may have noticed that I haven’t been blogging family sessions; truth is I am just way too busy to blog every session over the summer and fall months, but I will be sharing all of my favorite sessions over the course of the slower winter months, so stay tuned. Are you thinking about Christmas yet? I am! The past few weeks I have been stocking up on sweet holiday newborn props for all of my holiday newborns (still some openings available) and last week I released my Christmas studio and Outdoor winter mini session dates - dates are starting to book up fast, see available bookings and book your spot here today. There are still some fall dates available and now is the best time to book your extended holiday season family sessions, there are a few openings just before Christmas and New years to accommodate families that all get together over the holidays.

I met this gorgeous couple this summer and as soon as I met them I could tell that a) they would have the most beautiful baby and b) I was about to shoot my favourite maternity session of all time. Ashley arrived to maternity session with a few just lovely dresses to wear, we had the most amazing golden hour light, and as usual we had one of my favourite spots all to ourselves. Worst part - the mosquitoes! I was getting eaten to death right through my jeans and poor mama Ashley, changing as we went nearly got eaten alive. You just can’t win here all the way in the summer.

A few weeks later sweet little Bennett arrived..my 7th newborn Bennett of the year! The funny thing is that I always loved the name Bennett for a boy, but never got to use it since I had three girls. Now I guess I just book families who have a great taste in names. I arrived to a new mom and dad who had slept in a bit late (I would too if baby was sleeping) and a wide awake baby boy. After what seemed like hours, I finally got little B to sleep and we ended up with the most adorable sleepy shots and warm cuddly shots with mom and dad who were just so obviously in love with their new bundle of joy and with each other in their new role as parents. Ashley and Matt thank you so much for choosing me to capture this special time for your family. Wishing you all the best as a family of three and p.s Happy anniversary. Enjoy, {K}

Happy Thursday everyone, here is a rare afternoon post for you as last night got away from me and I never blogged this session as promised. Sending a huge thank you out to my mama who took my littlest for the afternoon so I could try and get somewhat caught up on my mountain of blogging, editing, packaging and sending USBS, banking, invoicing and some social media etc…if you were wondering what you are investing in when you book a session it’s not just the time I spend taking your photos, but all of the behind scenes stuff that takes place in order to deliver a professional quality experience to every family I am lucky to photograph. Pricing has been a hot topic as of late. I have shared this post on my personal Facebook page and had such a wonderful response and wanted to share here for every family that is thinking about investing in a session with me and as a thank you to everyone who has trusted me to capture their family’s precious memories and given me the opportunity to do a job that I love everyday. I’ve known some families for four years now and watching their families grow is really such an honour and privilege.

So something’s been on my mind.

I 100% understand everyone has a budget. I do, too. Everyone has bills and responsibilities. I do, too. We all do!
And a lot of people have their luxuries- or things they value highly.

Example: Most people have a smart phone. Those things aren’t cheap. But if it’s something you value, you invest.

Thing is- a lot of the stuff that’s expensive in our lives won’t last forever. My phone is only like 3 years old and it’s basically at the end of its life. Some people get a new phone everytime the new model comes out. That stuff isn’t cheap... but people place value to those things in their lives. If it matters to you, you’ll invest in it.

So here’s why I’m talking about this. I get really frustrated sometimes (a lot of photographers do) hearing about how we are too expensive... or our prices are ridiculous. Or cost “an arm and a leg.”

Because photography isn’t an outfit you’ll outgrow.
Photography isn’t a cell phone that’ll run too slow in two years.
Photography isn’t an accessory that’ll go out of style.
Or a car that won’t drive in 15 years.

Photographs are forever.
And photography is a way to capture life as it FLIES on by.

Photography is a way to remember how small your baby’s tiny toes were.
It’s a way to remember the smiles, the nose scrunches, the tears, the hugs, the heights, the tiny fingers and tiny toes, the kisses and the bonds.

It’s a snapshot into your lives at that very moment.
The moment’s that you can’t get back.

I promise you these photos you invest in won’t need a new battery and they won’t require a tune up.

They will exist for years and years to come.
When your kids are all like “Mom, you’re embarrassing me”
Or when your kids have somehow grown taller then you.
These photos will exist when your kids have moved into their own homes and have their own families.

They become priceless.
I’m writing this not to say HEY ignore your budgets!
No.
Not at all.
I’m writing this to maybe give you a different perspective. To educate about the importance of photography and why we all believe it’s a high priority. And maybe help you understand why we believe in the experience and product we give you.

Honestly, we just want you to love your photos and FEEL the memories flood back when you look upon them over the years.

When you invest in your photography, you invest in memories.
You invest in life.

It’s an honor to be apart of something so much bigger then myself and to be apart of your memories.

I met little Donovan a few weeks ago now and could not wait to share more from his session. First - oh my gosh that red hair, I don’t think in four years of photographing newborns I have ever met a more gorgeous ginger baby. And on top of that, 9.5 lbs. of pure baby squishiness. Sometimes I have to pinch myself, I really do photograph the most beautiful babies. This little guy is lucky to have two big sisters and you could just see the joy in their eyes and heart every time they got to hold or snuggle their new baby brother, so heart melting. Michelle Ann & Todd, thank you so much for inviting me into your beautiful home to capture this special time for your family. Wishing you all the very best as a family of five (or 6, we have to include Norman the Great Dane) .

I have been so lucky to have watched this family grow since they welcomed their first baby Alena a few years ago and was so thrilled when they contacted my to photograph their second baby’s first year. A little brother Xavier for Alena, and oh my heart does she ever love him. I still remember her love of baby dolls and now she has her own real life baby, she had so many snuggles and kisses for her new baby brother, so heart melting. Brittany and Aaron, thank you so much for choosing me as your family photographer. I can’t wait to watch little Xavier grow. Wishing you all the best as a family of 4.
